    The Main Event:

Having taken a deep dive into Valerie the Dachshund’s 529-day desert island sojourn last week, we wondered if more Adventures of Dogs was too much too soon, but some stories deserve to be told and Amber’s certainly qualifies.

No stranger to the road, Amber the mixed breed began her life as a street dog in Qatar and was recently brought to the UK by a rescue organization, who placed her with a foster family in England’s idyllic New Forest. All told, a great situation but for the fact that no one had explained to Amber that her new home was just that, a home, and so after dinner she made her way outside and started down the street. Upon discovering she was gone, enterprising friends and neighbors set up feeding stations and cameras in the hopes of tracking her down, but no such luck. Over a period of 4 weeks, Amber made her way 30 miles south to the English coastal town of Poole whereupon she took a mile-long swim to Brownsea Island in the Solent, a section of the English Channel, where she spent 3 days before deciding to swim back to the mainland and head back to her foster family.

At this point, Amber’s journey took a dangerous turn thanks to strong currents but this super-canine spotted a boat, swam up to it, and hooked her paws onto its ladder! Such was her grip that one of the boat’s crew had to get into the water and lift her into the boat from behind. Soggy but safe, Amber was driven home by her new friends and is now back with her foster family! Reached for comment, her foster mom said she uses three leashes when Amber is in the backyard just to be on the safe side. Amber the Adventurer, we salute you!

    Some Tasty Treats:

Rescuers attached a sausage to a drone to help tempt Millie, a chihuahua mix, back to safety. Nice work, rescuers, and well-played, Millie!

Max, a 4 year old Great Pyrenees, took himself out for a late dinner / early breakfast, walking 5 miles to get a burrito. He left home at 11.30 and after a 2 hour walk arrived at his favorite convenience store, where he waited outside for it to open for 5 HOURS before giving up and walked to his human’s boyfriend’s house - which he had never before visited!! - talk about a nose for adventure. Reunited with his family, he now gets his own home-cooked burrito every morning. Good work, Max, here’s some Furitos just for you!

Sometimes a canine news story is so monumental, so earth-shatteringly huge that it defies rhyme and reason and today, well, today we bring you one such story. 529 days in the making, this tale has it all: a remote Australian island, 2 frantic humans, a 5 day search, and 1 plucky heroine determined to save herself. This is the remarkable story of Valerie the Dachshund.

Earlier this month, we celebrated Pet Parent Appreciation Day by publishing a letter from a pup to her mom, expressing her gratitude and love; well, it seems that this letter spoke to one of the pup parents in our community who penned a response! As Dog Appreciation Month nears its end, we couldn’t think of a better way to honor it than publishing that letter, where the words of one speak for many. Dogs, we love you!
